Mounds are more than hills. They are places where history speaks...
What do mounds really tell us? Climbing them not only reveals beautiful landscapes. Beneath your feet is the earth that remembers centuries, and all around you are places that preserve traces of ancient settlements, people's daily lives, battles, and legends.
This August and September, we invite you to embark on a special journey through the hillforts of Dzūkija and Suvalkija.
The series of events “Dzūkija–Suvalkija: Nemunas Mounds Route” is an invitation to take a fresh look at the heritage of our region and discover history where it lies right next to us. These meetings are dedicated to the 2026 European Heritage Days, the theme of which is “Cultural Heritage: Protect, Nurture, Revitalize.”
Archaeologist, researcher and storyteller Prof. Dr. Vykintas Vaitkevičius will invite you to educational walks. Together we will travel through the mounds, listen to their stories and try to understand what these places can tell us about the people who lived here centuries ago.
We invite you to a meeting in Veisiejai Regional Park. It will take place on August 29 (Saturday), at 5 p.m., at Šlavantai Mound.
This is just one of the meetings. During the entire cycle of events, we will visit as many as 9 mounds and hear 9 different stories.
Organizer: Dzūkija-Suvalkija Protected Areas Directorate
The project is funded by: the Department of Cultural Heritage and the Directorate of Protected Areas of Dzūkija-Suvalkija.
