A memorial plaque to soldiers who died in the Afghan war and other military conflicts and missions was unveiled on February 17, 2018. You can find this memorial plaque next to the house marked number 3 on Seinų g., where the military commissariat was located during the Soviet era. In 1989, the USSR army was withdrawn from Afghanistan. Since 2004, war veterans have been commemorating this date in different places in Lithuania. In total, 4,475 Lithuanians participated in the Afghan war, including 37 from Lazdija. 96 soldiers returned to Lithuania in coffins, and two from Lazdija – J. Vizmantas and A. Gužas – also died.
