Towards a Theater of Consciousness: Redita Dominaitytė's "Book Theater" performance "Shadows of the Altars"

"Shadows of the Altars" is a modern theatrical experience in which literature becomes a game.

The performance "Shadows of the Altars" by the "Book Theater" is a contemporary, audiovisual form of theater, where a classic work of Lithuanian literature comes to life in an unconventional space and in an unexpected format. Based on the staging of the third part of the novel by Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas, the audience is involved in an interactive process - here they not only listen to the story, but also perform game tasks, communicate with the aesthetics of the era through smells, authentic objects and atmospheric experiences. This is not a traditional performance - it is an interactive game in which the viewer becomes a creator.

By listening to the audio recording, participants meet the characters of the novel not only in their minds, but also by breathing in the scents of the interwar period, touching authentic objects, and tasting delicacies popular at the time. The creator of the performance, director and actress Redita Dominaitytė, together with the "Book Theater", created a format in which the viewer becomes a co-creator - each performance is a unique, personally experienced version of the novel. This performance is an opportunity to rethink cultural heritage in a modern human context, to establish an emotional connection with the text, and to engage in personal reflection. Here, history and the present, text and experience, meet, each viewer - with their own questions and answers.

This performance is part of the event series "Towards the Theatre of Consciousness" implemented at the Lazdijai Cultural Centre and its branches. It will present five performances based on Lithuanian dramaturgy and created by professional performing arts creators as a way to rethink sustainability. The audience will be invited not only to see innovative works that break the standards of theatrical creation, but also to look at creation as a way of thinking.
